Alex – NetSpotKeymasterHi everyone! Thanks a lot for your interest in NetSpot WiFi Mapper.
We hear you. We know it would be SO awesome to have NetSpot on an iPad, or even maybe on any iOS device. There will definitely be an iPad app some time soon, however, currently Apple doesn’t provide any Wi-Fi SDK for iOS developers, so we are somewhat delayed. Once our negotiations are over, we’ll definitely head on to the new release, as we also agree that it’s much simpler to do wireless surveys with an iPad rather than MacBook.
We are also planning some alternative features that might alleviate the survey process for those of you who don’t have a mobile Mac in their household.

whistlParticipantThis seems unlikely to receive Apple’s app store approval, as they have previously approved then removed other attempts to provide WiFi scanner functionality.

Alex – NetSpotKeymasterRrrrrrright…

rgandersParticipantGood luck with this. I would love to see the app, would definitely pay for it, and have many friends so impressed with my macbook app that they are chomping at the bit to get it on ipad.

jellymellyParticipantrelease it on Cydia with ads then haha.. just like Wififofum after their app got taken down by Apple Gestapos.

Alex – NetSpotKeymasterWe don’t think it’s worth the effort then.

mnjhostParticipantlove the program and cannot wait for the IPAD version. would not mind paying for a great version, great work guys.

Alex – NetSpotKeymasterThanks. We would be extremely glad to get any help with the Wi-Fi SDK for iOS from Apple. Otherwise we can only deliver something on jailbroken devices.

DecibelParticipantI don’t know much about what is and isn’t made available with Apples iOS SDK, but you may try simple using the iOS device to map the network strength as you wander around and then sync it with the Mac for other features. Of course that is probably the main issue that you’re having, because putting together the rest should be relatively easy.
Thanks for a great product. I haven’t looked quite yet, but you should have a Paypal donations button somewhere on your page. Keeping the app free, but requesting donations would be mighty fine of you, and you would definitely get my money..when i have a little to spare.

Alex – NetSpotKeymasterWe are actually heading on to NetSpot PRO with advanced features for those users who find the app worth an investment, so just stay tuned and you will be able to become our PRO user soon. Thanks for your kind offer of a donation. We will also ensure that there’s always a free edition of NetSpot that will help most users handle a professional wireless site survey of their area.
Concerning Apple’s iOS SDK… the real problem is not getting data FROM the iOS device to Mac, or else. It’s impossible to get access to wireless adapter on iPhone or iPad and get any data out of it. And actually, their wireless adapters are not that powerful in comparison with the Mac’s one. So the data might be slightly less accurate.

FrankbParticipantWell the data might not be as accurate but at least we will have a very portable device whereby we can get relative reading. If you are in a “dead” spot with no readings… well does it really make a difference. If you are doing a commercial survey, then use the OSX version. Less accurate is OK by me. Regards

fo0barParticipantFrankb the API of iOS makes it simply not possible to do this. Its not like it would be so-so but not fine, or less accurate. It is simply impossible.

Alex – NetSpotKeymasterActually possible on jailbroken devices, and then it comes to questioning the professional level of the data you can collect. I can easily demonstrate reception issues with my iPad losing wireless connection in locations where my MacBook has a good quality of connection and gets online.

ezarikianParticipantI think there’s significant value in an iOS version since it’s very hard to prepare a wifi network for phones and tablets when you have the point of view of a MacBook that has much better reception. I definitely found the Mac version useful because I found the decibel threshold where the phones and tablets would not work, but having the point of view of an iPad or iPhone would help a lot. Maybe we could superimpose both surveys on top one another and it would make for a very interesting report. You definitely need more APs if you plan on supporting there devices or have a difficult RF environment.
I wish there was a way of getting Apple’s attention, maybe make it sync via iCloud with the Macs and make it save all the data on iCloud? Export to numbers? I don’t know if the carrot on a stick approach would be fruitful, there are a LOT of developers, but maybe some PR at WWDC?
The portability, extra battery run time, and the “iPad/iPhone” point of view would definitely make it worthwhile for me. It’s a shame one would have to jailbreak just to be able to run such a useful and harmless app. (I’d do it if there were no other option)
I also think something might be possible in the realm of “pinging the default gateway and measuring packet loss” .. that might help out if superimposed on the MacBook version of the survey.
While I’m at it, I also have an idea for some sort of “smart zoom” in the map and support for vector graphics, so you could actually come in and see the room number in the blueprint.
Hope this is useful!
Thanks again for such an excellent piece of software

There definitely is!

Right, that’s a great way to assess your wireless coverage and see how devices with weaker adapters will act.

“There is no API in iOS. Sorry” – was their reply.

You mean using iOS devices for active scanning?

Could you send me more details on this idea, please?

Thank you for your support!
